Even the most fastidious recyclers can turn into wanton litterbugs when winds whip their umbrellas right out of their hands during a storm. Luckily, many of these long-lost parasols were recovered by artist Jean Shin, who went to work at deconstructing them and sewing them together to create this shade-giving canopy for the Socrates Sculpture Park in NYC. Once complete, the canopy was hung from several trees in the park, creating a playful, polka-dotted shadow on the grass below.
WHY THIS MATTERS:
Each day, the United States throws away enough trash to fill 63,000 garbage trucks. By recycling what we can, such as the umbrellas used in this installation, we can significantly keep waste from accumulating on our land, and more alarmingly, in giant patches floating around the ocean causing harm to its ecosystems.
